Masks, a simple way of disguising insecurities. Nearly everyone has something they want hidden. From a lack of confidence, to a broken heart, a mask can hide it all. That is why so many dawn a mask and refuse to take it down. While each mask is unique and special, it carries traits like the person wearing it. While some are solid and conceal, others are transparent or cracked which allows insecurities to bleed through. Only as we learn and empathize with others, can we begin to understand their insecurities and more importantly, our own.
In short, we evaluate two characters and one group of people in Neil Gaimans "How to Talk to Girls at Parties": the charming Vic, the socially awkward Enn, and the girls. It is not difficult to see that Vic

Having read other works by Neil Gaman, this idea would line up with his writing style. Within the story, there are references to deformities on their body. For example, Wain Wain, has a bifurcated finger which she makes constant attempts to hide. Furthermore, she comments on her inability to copulate with others based on that imperfection. Another girl spoke about learning to breathe and allowing air to pass through her vocal chords for the first time. Overall, Wain Wain's bifurcated finger and her comment about it, along with another girl speaking about learning to breathe and speak drives the argument of her alien species. In a literal sense, the human bodies are the “mask” that conceals them as aliens. They are attempting to blend in with the human populace. Vic is the charming one. The guy who knows how to talk to girls, what to say, and when to say it. It is clearly evident based on Enns memory. They always show up to a party, and Vic, using his charm, finds his way to the prettiest girl. However, his confidence and charm are the mask. At the end of the story, Vic runs to find Enn so they can leave. As Vic gots closer to Stella, he may have discovered something hidden deep that scared him as he rushes Enn to leave the party. Or, Vic could have learned something about himself that he did not know he was masking. Maybe he realized although he puts on a confident act on the outside, he is just a scared teenage boy, not ready to take the next step in
