Personality is the combination of qualities that form a person’s distinctive character. In OB theory personality is defined as ‘the sum of ways in which an individual reacts to and interacts with others’. There is research that personality is mostly derived from heredity, but a person’s environment also can shape one’s personality as well. Personality traits are often measured by companies when selecting applicants for employment. Two such assessments used are the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Big Five Personality Model. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a 100-question personality test that asks questions related to how situations make them feel or act. Although this is the most widely used personality assessment, it has many flaws. The results are too narrowly defined and are often difficult to interpret. These are referred as The Dark Triad because of the negative connotations associated with these traits. Machiavellianism is a trait that is associated with a high level of pragmatism and emotional distance. This person will succeed by any means, regardless of who it may harm. A person with this trait with often quickly rise to a powerful position but lose in the long run because they are not well liked nor regarded as ethical. A narcissist is arrogant and has an exaggerated sense of worth. They will often exploit people in a way to rise to the top, but their lack of empathy and skewed self-perception is often their downfall. The last trait in the Dark Triad is psychopathy. This trait is characterized by a lack of concern for others, lack of remorse, guilt, and shame. Although these three traits are often seen in those that rise to power they are often not regarded as effective
