Comparing Oprah Winfrey's Address To Stanford University

After viewing Oprah Winfrey’s “Harry’s Last Lecture” address to Stanford University, she brought up a few interesting points that stood out to me. Just as Dr. Rosemary Radford Reuther, Winfrey focused her speech about becoming resilient although there are factors that try to prevent your success. Although Winfrey’s speech did not focus on ecofeminism and globalization, she still had concepts that relate to these concepts. Both of these extraordinary women focus on religion and how God can be used to have a life of fulfillment. After viewing her speech, it allowed me to ponder my experience at my service site.

After completing my service learning at University High School, I left the building feeling uncomfortable. When I was walking home, I had to stop and think about how drastically the school has changed. There has been a lot of teachers leaving Newark Public Schools causing the classrooms to be filled with substitutes and unmotivated students. During Winfrey’s speech, she keeps telling the students to never give up and to always stay motivated. It reminded me of how these students in the Newark Public School system are being disrespected. The school system has let them down by not providing them with resources, scholarship information, motivation, and school supplies.
