Comparing 'Slave And Emperor' Principles Of Stoicism

For the third topic for consideration, I chose question four in the text. I am convinced that both a slave and an emperor can share principles of Stoicism. Stoicism is a term based on principles of self-control, knowledge, pleasure, and happiness. This also includes how to deal with rash desires, ignorance, pain, and unhappiness. Stoicism is where there is an equal balance between virtue and knowledge. I believe one must gain control over their desires and emotions, and become grounded to the understanding of nature or a higher power. Wisdom, happiness and pleasure can be obtained by bending with the flow of nature and reality. I think it is a way to make fate in life a happy, and pleasurable experience. An emperor could be very giving with their money and time, or they could get a good education and contribute to the world. He is wealthy man who would live a comfy, happy life with little pain as long as he could control his desires and emotions from causing him suffering. Having a strong desire and no control over emotions can cause disastrous situations and an unhappy way of life. A slave in a poor life style that is anything but happy could be happy. This slave could have a positive outlook on life, believe they are lucky to be alive, and thankful for all they do have. This man is wise to be appreciative of life where he will not despair into unhappiness. Pain can be better dealt with through a positive outlook on life where you get what you get, and you do not get upset about anything. Pain is just another part of life, and can be dealt with through positive means depending on the person. A slave back in the Greek society could honestly live a happy, wise, and less painful life by accepting his fate as what it is. His acceptance is freeing and can make his life a lot less
