Steve Jobs’ and J.K. Rowling’s Commencement Addresses

Failure is a good thing, not bad in some people’s perspective. This group of people just happen to be two famous people: Steve Jobs and J.K. Rowling. Job and Rowling both believed that failure helped them in life, not hurt them. Steve Jobs introduces this objective as if this is what guided him through part of his life, but it kind of did. He shows this first from when he dropped out of college. He elaborates on this by saying, “It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.” His next example from his life is when he was fired from Apple. He says “I didn’t see it then, but getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could of happened to me.” A little later in the speech he says that this was great, being a beginner again. He soon developed two new companies: Pixar and NeXT. He says that failure helped him a lot through life, and is hoping it will help you too. …show more content…

Rowling on the other hand though, showed this at first explaining it with her dark stages in life. She elaborates on this by explaining how it can help you and giving examples from her life. She first gives an example from her life, which is, “Now I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea if there was going to be what the press had since represented as as kind of fairy tale resolution.” She also stated from her life and to others, “Simply because failure meant stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.” She also said, “Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way.”, stating this to represent from her
