In “Smoker’s Get a Raw Deal”, Stanley S. Scott argues that smokers are being discriminated against, and being able to smoke wherever they like is a right that is being taken away. This argument is not effective. One reason is that it is stated at the end of the article that the writer, Stanley Scott at the time was the vice president of the tobacco company Philip Morris. This creates a bias in his argument since he is likely to favor smoking. Which can lead to leaving out certain details in order to sway the readers toward smoking.
This 1965 research showed that students with intellectual disabilities who were educated in a general education setting, “achieved more academically than those in special classes,” (Goldstein, Moss & Jordan).
An interview was conducted with Miss Lauren Ursta, a special education teacher of the Hazleton Area School District, and began with a conversation concerning the specific terminology relating to intellectual disabilities, which uncovered frustration concerning an individual’s initial terminologies. Miss Ursta feels the student should be talked about, and establishes a classroom dynamic that focuses on the capabilities of her students, not their disabilities. In recent years, where learning disabilities are recognized more frequently, it is recommended that these diagnoses are made prior to graduating high school. Nancy Foley writes that “the entry into higher education is the first time they are responsible for getting their needs met”. They may no longer receive the attentions or accommodations that were offered in high school. Graduation rates of the learning disabled are already lower than those of the average student, so high schools should be sending off graduates with knowledge of their academic ability.

But there can be a disadvantage to all that. Having certain learning disabilities can be treated unfairly in certain schools like being separated from kids that might help them, or being treated like little children. This article has influenced what I will do in my classroom by assuring that everything can be easily adjusted for students with significant cognitive disabilities. I will use the information in the article to reflect on whether the lessons will be easy or hard to adjust to the students with significant cognitive disabilities. I will use the information from the article to make sure that everyone knows how to adjust the lessons and activities for children with significant cognitive disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) aimed to improve the education of students with disabilities and amend the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. The history of Special Education begins with the 18th century. Before that time, persons with disabilities were not taken in consideration, and were often mistaken as being possessed by evil powers, cursed, or simply stupid (Blackhurst 13, 14).
