There are many different characters in this story. They are introduced to each other one at a time by being brought up to the Glade by an elevator in the ground. Once a month another boy is brought up to the Glade. The boys learn to adapt to each other and their surroundings. Thomas arrives and the very next day Teresa, the first girl, arrives. Everything in the Glade starts to change. Thomas has tons of questions and wants to find answers. He wants to understand what happens to someone when they get stung by a griever. He is especially interested in finding a way out of the maze. Thomas discovers that the moving walls are actually spelling out words. He uses his problem solving skills to help the boys get out of the maze. One day the walls do not close. Grievers are coming into the Glade. Thomas decides to go for it and get out. Some of the boys follow Thomas into the maze. They run into many obstacles and even death for some. It is adventurous for the boys to trust Thomas and try to escape their home in the Glade. They finally make it out and see that the whole thing was a set up. They were being tested like in a game. There is a whole bigger world out there and this isn’t the only place where tests are happening. Their adventure is just
