If you were rowing past your enemy in 1775, what would you do? Paul Revere faced a scary and dangerous time while rowing by his enemies across the Charleston River. There are many similarities and differences between the poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride”, and the historical account of Revere’s ride. Always Something More Beautiful “Always Something More Beautiful” is a poem by Stephen Dunn, born in Forest Hills, NY. I got attracted to this poem, because it reminded me when I was at the Regionals for a Cross-Country race and reflected how humans’ life can be fair or beautiful. The cluster “time, clock, finish” clarifies for a measurement that refers to a competitive race.
Motel rooms hold hundreds of stories and secrets, whether good or bad, within their walls. James Dickey’s “Adultery” and W.D. Snodgrass’s “Leaving the Motel,” are two different poems about a couple leaving their own sinful secret behind in a motel. Although both poems deal with the theme of married men and women involved in sexual affairs, the couples have different relationships regarding how the man truly feels toward the woman. The points of view, relationship between the couples, symbols within the motel rooms, and the role of guilt in both poems completely contrast from each other. Both poems are dramatic monologues, meaning that the poems are written as a monologue spoken by a single character’s point of view.
Poetry Analysis Once the poem “History Lesson” was written numerous poetry foundations celebrated it for many reasons. “History Lesson” not only makes an impact on literature today it has also impacted people also. This poem inspires people and moves them to the point to where they can find a personal connection to the poem itself and to the writer. Not only does it hold emotional value for those who were victimized and those whose family were victimized by the laws of segregation, but the poem is also celebrated for its complexity. The poem uses many techniques to appeal to the reader.
Everyone has a father, whether their relationship with him is good or bad. Webster’s Dictionary defines the word father as follows: a man in relation to his natural child or children. “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke and “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden are two poems with themes set around a father. These poems deal with accounts of the poets’ fathers as they reminisce about certain scenes from their childhood. “My Papa’s Waltz” and “Those Winter Sundays” show similarities and differences in structure, literary elements, and central idea.
1.) I would argue that the speakers of the “The Chimney Sweeper” poems are fairly ambiguous, but their levels of experience and innocence are quite apparent. Also, I think think that the age of the narrators (generally) are clear. For example, I think the poem’s narrator in “Songs of Innocence” is a child.
Poetry plays with your mind and feelings at the same time. I identified myself with these two poems and clearly I will say the reason of that. I am Latina and English is my second language. The author explains the difficulties of have a father that did not allow her to speak both English and Spanish in their house.
In “The Trouble with Poetry”, and “Introduction to Poetry” Billy Collins focuses on the issue of forced inspiration, and the lack of appreciation readers, and aspiring poets have for the feel of poetry. In “Introduction to Poetry”, Collins mentions that some poetry enthusiasts try too hard to find the meaning of a poem; to try and decipher it like some ancient hieroglyphics, that they forget that poetry is not an essay and does not necessarily have to have a distinct message. In stanza’s seven and eight, the speaker states that poetry should be felt, and that what one poem means to a group of people could have a completely different effect on another group. In stanza eight “Feel the walls” is the speaker’s ways of saying that one should feel a poem and let the poem speak to them, instead of searching for what they believe to be its true meaning.
Both Poems Of “ Chimney Sweep” relate and differ in tone by, addressing the situation differently. For instance in the first poem “ From a Song of Innocence” uses a more depressing tone and comes of very demanding at one point. Like in the first stanza the author informs the reader that the mother of the little boy has passed causing somewhat of his depression. Along with his father selling him right after.
The two poems that we read about which was “Passionate Shepherd” and “ The Bait”, both poems intended to have beautiful meaning and the poets objective was to win over a girl that they wanted to impress and marry. The difference is that Marlowe the poet of “Passionate Shepherd” was going more for of the idyllic approach basically meaning being one with nature. While John Donne was going after that similar aspect while having a bit of a different approach to it focus on being one with nature but also focusing on the beauty of the woman and being very detailed with the different features and Marlow focused on trying to explain to the woman he loved all the different things that he could buy her, he focused more on materialistic things. Poetry Analysis Poetry has been around for a very long time, and although it is often cherished and loved, we as readers do not understand what the meaning behind a poem really is. This is focused on in the short poem, “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins. In his work the speaker of the poem uses the poetic elements: diction, figurative language, and imagery. The speaker uses diction, through the choice of words to create the connotation, or how the words affect you.
In the poems by “william Blake” they are both talking on the same subject matter of Chimney Sweepers and how they feel about their situation, they also both use elements of a dark and light tone in their poems but address it differently and end different from each other. The poem “ from songs of Innocence” the overall feel of the story is bittersweet. At the beginning of the poem, it starts off in a very dark place “When my mother died I was very young” and towards the middle they’re is a tone shift to a more uplifting feel “ he open’d the coffins and set them all free;” , this makes it bittersweet because they are in a dark place but yet feel hopeful for their situation. When reading these two poems, one can tell that they go together. The first poem is clearly an invitation and the second poem is a reply to his invitation. They flow together perfectly and share a lot of things but remain quite different. These poems speak tone, imagery and theme. Tone is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience.
“Life begins at your comfort zone.” Neale Walsh once said. Many share this same outlook in life while others may say otherwise. Al Young shares the same belief in life as Neale Walsh in his short poem. “For Poets”, by Al Young, is an uplifting and inspirational poem.
