At what age should sexuality Education begin in a public school setting?
In my opinion, this education should start at the preschool level (age 4). Children at this age become more aware of differences they have in relations to each other i.e. hair and physical features. In this discovery, kids become inquisitive and want to know more about this new thing. I believe if parents begin to discuss these differences (age-appropriate) early on, the more likely kids would develop into more sexually responsible teens and adults. The Sexuality Information and education Council of the United States (SIECUS) calls this Comprehensive Sexuality Education. How we perceive things sometimes, is not necessarily reality or accurate. Sexuality was perceived a different way when my parents were growing up, just as it was different for their parents. Society play a major role in this development and it is imperative that parents pay close attention to the evolution in order to equip their youth for what lies ahead. I believe this is where my parents unintentionally fell short. Because of their beliefs and upbringing, I had to gain a deeper knowledge about sexuality from my community. Now in fairness the things I had learned from the community, my parents was able to give me advice on to the best of their ability. However, it did not have the same impact in getting knowledge first-hand. For instances, this week’s article “Pop Culture Sex Ed: What Media Teaches Us About Sexual Health” talks about TV shows like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Moms, shows the phenomenon of learning through media. Over four million viewers tune in to these shows and our youth are affected by it. Whether they are learning what to do or not to do, bottom line they are learning!!
