Conflicting Viewpoints Essay
In assignment 1.1, I discussed on whether more gun control regulations should be enacted. I gave the pros and the cons of the assignment. After critically evaluating both sides, I took a position which was there should be additional gun control regulations.
Identify (3) three premises (reasons)
The first reason as to why I chose this position is that more gun control laws would assist in lowering gun deaths. Between 1999 and 2013 the number of deaths caused by guns was 464,033. The percentage of suicides as a result of the guns was 58.2% (ProCorn.Org. 2017). The number of unintentional deaths and homicides was 2.2% and 37.7% respectively (ProCorn.Org, 2017). There are a number of arguments that have been put forward to argue against the need for stricter guns laws. Three of the arguments are they do not prevent crimes, the laws will interfere with the right of an individual to self-dense, and the regulations are racist.
Using questions set by Elbow, I realize there are several interesting concepts associated with their arguments. The interesting thing about their position or arguments is that they fail to take into consideration the fact a large percentage of suicide rates have been carried out using guns. Moreover, their argument on the law being racist is very lame and just needs to be disregarded.
Nonetheless, there are different things I noted if I believed the position. The first is that their argument on guns used as self-defense tools is true. In many occasions, many people have been able to protect themselves during attacks. However, for the argument to be effective, the owner of the gun needs to know how to use it.
