On February 14 another mass shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Yet another 17 innocent children were killed due to the cruelty of just one’s actions, and the U.S still does nothing about it. If we raise the gun age, it will become difficult for these heartless people to obtain guns. The gun age should be raised to 25 and restrictions should be added because it prevents violence, prevents children and criminals from getting their hands on them, and reduces the costs of gun violence. Gun violence is found all over the world, especially in the United States. According to the Washington Post, “Twenty states and the District of Columbia have set their own minimum age laws ranging from 14 in Montana to 21 in Illinois, but in the remaining 30 states it’s technically legal for a child to possess a long gun.” (The Washington Post 1). While young people using guns are a problem, adults are a problem as well. One night in Philadelphia two men named Edward DiDonato and Gerald Ung were both drunk fighting at a street corner. DiDonato teased drunk Ung, and soon enough he had shot Edward six times without even realizing what he was doing. (Osnos 1). “ He spread his arms, stepped forward, and said, ‘Who are you going to shoot, man?’ Ung pulled the trigger. Afterward, he couldn't recall how many times—he said it felt like a movie, and he was ‘seeing sparks and hearing pops.’" (Osnos 1) This is an example of gun violence that was created just because he had a permit to carry the gun around with him. No person should have to die because one decided to make a bad decision. “According to the National Rifle Association (NRA), guns are used for self-defense 2.5 million times a year,” (Procon.org 1).
