Conformity In The Workplace

Switch on, switch off, it is that simple to change from one personality to another. Once I step into that back room of my work, I am transformed into one of them. I have to become someone who my family members and friends don’t even notice; subsequently, someone who is of completely opposite characteristics. There are several reasons why I need to conform to a certain standard in order to fit into the ideal in-n-out worker. The first reason I need to conform to the in-n-out ideal is that I need to be seen as sociable. Everyone that I work with are very much extrovert while I am an introvert, so “in a complete betrayal” of my actual personality I had to be like one of them. When I first got hired people would give me strange looks because I wouldn’t say hello to anyone I would just go right into work, but later on I learned that it is important to say your hellos before starting work. At work “to play coy” was not an option, but to be spontaneous and outspoken was. In a matter of months I was “no longer silent”; in fact, I had transformed into this social butterfly. I “was healthy, tested intelligent,” but that wasn’t enough for them. Since I was little I would suffer from panic attacks, and I learned the hard way that in such a fast working environment there is no time to panic. So as a result I would have to put my anxieties aside; in fact, we have this saying to leave your troubles at the door, which definitely came into play in this work field. Whenever I am affected by my anxieties, I have to automatically forget about them in order to get the task done. They expect me to forget “the terror” and anxieties.
