Synopsis:
Students, in general, have had school internet access for less than thirty years. At the initial phase of incorporating this educational tool, schools focused on monitoring accessibility to predators and pornography. These issues were important safety concerns, but focusing on these two topics did nothing to prepare students to operate as active citizens in the cyber world. Internet access is available on multiple devices in and out of the school setting. Children need instruction on recognizing personal identity threats, how to acceptably participate in social media, and detecting, reacting to, and refraining from cyberbullying. Schools need proactive student development focusing on all acceptable internet participation on and off school campus. …show more content…

Students may engage in cyberbullying without remorse possibly because of the disconnection between posting comments about an individual as opposed to personally addressing the victim of the attack. Schools that add intervention media strategies allow student empowerment. Children need to understand how to refrain from participating in cyberbullying and protect themselves against cyberattack. Media moguls also recognize the need to address cyberbullying. Several popular television stations are actively addressing cyberbullying through positive public service announcements during children’s programming. Websites are adding resources that train children, parents, and educators on responsible cyber use, and social media is incorporating features that allow individuals to report and remove cyberbullying
