The Journal Times editorial: Cyberbullying: When in doubt, turn it off provides evidence that supports their opinion that parents shouldn’t be prosecuted for their child's behavior online, instead parents should try to prevent their children from cyberbullying. The author proposes that parents need to be more aware of what their children are doing on their electronic devices. They believe that when parents supervise what their kids are doing online there is a less chance cyberbullying can occur. The editorial begins by illustrating an example of cyberbullying. It discusses a young girl who was brutally attacked on social media. She was told to die and asked why she hadn’t taken her life yet. Soon after this the young girl did. The editorial captures the reader's attention because it appeals to their emotions. This report causes parents and anyone who has experienced cyberbullying to feel devastated, and creates an urge for them to want make a change. Being someone who uses social media on a daily basis I believe parents should be cautious of what their children are doing online. They need to educate their children on the significance of cyberbullying and “how some things we might do or say to someone that seem funny at the time are actually pretty hurtful”(Cyberbullying Research Center). In order for parents to make sure their children are doing appropriate things online they must inspect their online activity daily. Inappropriate content should be made aware of and addressed with the child in reasonable manner. If the parent is too hostile with the child it can cause them to want to be rebellious, and do what they shouldn’t online. The parent will also be aware if their child is being cyberbullying, and could help their child deal with this
