Author and editor of two magazines, Lauren Tarshis in the essay, Is Facebook Making You Mean?, published on September 5, 2011 in a classroom magazine addresses the topic of online bullying through the popular social networking site, Facebook, and argues that these sites should be used responsibly to ensure the safety of all users. Tarshis supports her claim first by providing incidents and facts that prove the immense effects rude comments and thoughtless jokes have on the person receiving them. Second by, making an emotional appeal to her audience which creates a unity between the reader and writer. Finally by, establishing her credibility as a writer by providing an extensive amount of educated assertions supported by scientific studies.
Cyberbullying is generally geared towards the younger generation of the youth, however, there has been cases where adults have been victims as well. In 2008 there was a case of cyberbullying that was carried out by a Missouri mom Lori Drew where she concentrated a public spotlight on the damage and abuse that speech in social media can cause to children and even convinced the advancement of a new legal idea on how to approach to understand that harm and to deal with the harm. The 49 year old Lori Drew created a MySpace account by the name of “Josh Evans,” (Steinhauser, 2008, para. 8-11) who was a teenage boy. The purpose of the creation for this account was to begin a dialogue with her very own 13 year old daughter’s former friend Megan Meier.
Social Media Social media is online platforms where people socialize online or communicate for entertainment, dating, business, or other reasons. Most people of all ages are now using social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok on a daily basis. Unfortunately, some peolpe are using social media to spread hateful messages. Officials are still trying to find ways to manage these destructive messages and create consequences for these cyberbullies. Although some may say that these offenders should not be punished, individuals who are particiapting in cyberbullying should be prosecuted because the victims cant escape the bullying, they feel under pressure, and need a safe lpace to communicate on online
Due to the increase of technology, it has become increasingly easy for students to bully each other on social media or by e-mail. This new method of communication allows students to make fun and belittle others anonymously, behind a computer screen. Cyberbullying has become increasingly prominent at local schools but despite the disruptions it may cause, schools should not be allowed to limit online speech. Cyberbullying does not affect the majority of people, it is not the most terrible offense and it happens oftentimes outside of school.

Over the past recent years, cyber bullying has been a major type of bulling in most adolescent in the US. On a research conducted by the National Crime Victimization Surveys (NCES) showed that 71.9% adolescents reported being bullied once or twice in the school year, 19.6% reported once or twice a month, 5.3% reported once or twice a week, and 3.1% almost every day. This is therefore as a result in increasingly use of technology in the 21st century amongst adolescents. Social media has become a platform where bullies are able to exploit the flaws of their victims on a much larger scale. The rapid diffusion of information makes the detriment even more significant, but with the proper awareness, the number of bullying cases can be dramatically decreased.
McClatchy writes for a national newspaper in Minnesota and is currently drawing attention to cyber bullying. She explores new methods to combat this new type of bullying, which is derived from the internet. This article provides examples on several solutions that have been employed by different states to resolve the issue. Many state governments have come up with new laws requiring schools to construct policies to counter cyber bullying. The article also quotes a professor from John Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public health; he states that the increased usage and reliance on the Internet and smartphones will have a big impact towards cyber bullying.
Cyberbullying is something that is so common today because people find it easier to say things over the internet rather than saying it in person.
