To Become A Khan In the book Genghis:Birth of an Empire by Conn Iggulden, Temujin is the name of a young boy. A young boy whose family has just been cast out of their tribe, the position of Khan being hijacked by Eeluk. And he has to survive with nothing except the clothes on his back. This story is very much a coming of age story, but in a way where Temujin is forced to be a grown up when he is not necessarily ready.
His brother Bekter has been stealing food, so Temujin kills him: “ He looked across at Kachuin’s horrified face, then grimaced, reaching down and shoving the blade into Bekter’s neck, releasing his blood and his life.” (Iggulden 135). This shows that Temujin is ruthless, and he kills Bekter for the greater good. This ruthlessness shows in the history of Genghis Khan: he would come to a town and tell them that if they surrendered they could keep their religion, and overall way of living. But if they did not comply, Genghis would first order the deaths of all of the men in the town, and give them another chance to surrender. Consequently if they did not he would kill the women and children and build a mountain of skulls. He keeps that promise, with a long battle ending in Eeluk’s demise. This quality is further shown in the movie Mongol, when Temujin’s blood brother Jamukha accosts him after leaving camp with a few of Jamukha’s people. He is very violent towards Temujin and this is not easily forgotten. He was not just about to leave this man without a lesson, subsequently Temujin beats Jamukha’s army with no issues.
