Similarly, psychodynamic therapist uses the talking therapy (counselling) to treat people with mental illness, they listen to the patient’s feelings and talk about what had happened in their early life and try to resolve the problem they had.

An average person’s life is filled with many things that can overwhelm a person, cause anxiety, worry, or (as mentioned) stress. But it doesn’t need to be that way. Each one of these forms of therapy make up what we now as the cognitive behavior approaches. These approaches were developed by men like Albert Ellis, Aaron Beck, and William Glasser. The cognitive-behavioral therapies are meant to be a short term treatment. It is goal orientated, and a pretty hands on approach.
The controversy surrounding cognitive behavioural approaches
There are many different interesting interventions of psychology. Think about all the different mental disorders people suffer from, there are all different kinds of ways to help them overcome these. The definition of psychology is “the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context” (Webster). One intervention that caught my eye is primal therapy. According to Psychology Today, Primal therapy is, “a form of psychotherapy that focuses on a patient's earliest emotional experiences and encourages verbal expression of childhood suffering, typically using an empty chair or other prop to represent a parent toward whom anger is directed” (psychology today).
Because they lack emotions , psychotherapy helps the individual to be more proactive in a community setting with chances of adapting to it. Another form of treatment is medication. Medication is usually the first resort pertaining to remedies and cures. In this case medication can be detrimental because of the side effects it causes depending on the medication.
I have always found behavioral theory/therapy interesting, due to the fact that I am on board with the idea that behaviors are learned in some way, shape, or form; whether or not we were intended to learn the behavior. As therapists, I feel one of the biggest things we will be doing is helping our clients unlearn a behavior that will spark more positive changes in their lives. Along with that, one thing I really like about how the text presents behavioral therapy is its explanation of positive reinforcement and punishment and how it explains how they are simple concepts, yet they are complex and not as easy as they seem. I also like the idea of self-monitoring, while it can have its setbacks if a client does not record any information or records unnecessary information, it can really be beneficial to the client and therapist.
Empirical evidence has continued evolve to include new research regarding such established psychological principles from positive psychology, for example. Positive psychology does not focus on the positive at the expense of the negative; instead, it recognizes negative emotions, failures, and problems, and other aspects of traditional psychotherapy, which are designed to alleviate pain or restore a person to normal functioning. Positive psychology emphasizes what is right, rather than wrong by promoting superior functioning (Biswas-Diener, 2010). I am not discounting Prochaska and Norcross. Their combined expertise spans more than 50 years and is invaluable to my knowledge of psychotherapy.
