Barbie is a doll of controversy and changes to suit the times. She has always been fashion forward and kept up with the celebrities at the time. Barbie continues to change in characteristics to fit in with society’s interests by recently creating a new line of dolls that have realistic body shapes. Barbie has never let the expectations of society crush her dreams and so she has had many careers such as president, astronaut and computer engineer.
Over the past 50 years Barbie has kept with the times and her outfits have changed to suit. The first Barbie could be seen with many traits that suited the times. Barbie had the high arched brows, red lips and a pony tail with curly bangs which came in either brown or blonde. In 1959 Barbie had the ideal body shape for woman, she represented the prefect mature body. Barbie has kept with the times and changed herself to suit what society sees as perfection and this causes controversy with many parents as they believe that Barbie is setting unrealistic body image goals to young girls. In 1963, Mattel believed that maybe Barbie was too perfect as she didn’t even have a freckle so they created a best friend for her, Midge Hadley. Midge was more approachable than Barbie as she was less intimidating and less glamorous. Though Midge and Barbie had the same body shape Midge had a wider and a more friendly face that was covered in freckles. In 2016, Mattel released a new line of Barbies that have a range of diverse looks that reflect modern day society. The company wanted it to be such a surprise they called it ‘Project Dawn’ as it was a new beginning. The new range involved Barbie coming in all different shapes and sizes.
