The constant quest to escape boredom has led to problems in the Brave New World and our modern society. Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World in 1932. Huxley wasn't warning us against watching television or going to the movies occasionally, he says in this interview with Mike Wallace that TV can be harmless, but rather he warns against the constant distraction becoming more important in our lives instead of the problems that affect us. Given how stressful people find the idea of a tech-free day and how we take our pop culture so seriously that it was targeted for use by Russian bots, he might have been onto something. The society in the Brave New World and our Modern World have replaced their values and ability to feel emotions for momentary pleasure. "The greatest care is taken to prevent you from loving anyone too much. There's no such thing as a divided allegiance; you're so conditioned that what you ought to do is on the whole so pleasant, so many of the natural impulses are allowed free play" (Brave New World" pg.237). In the compelling novel Brave New World, the characters who live in the artificial society don't belong to anyone but all the same, they belong to everyone. Their society has taught them to not belong to one person, so they don't have a deep and personal relationship. This social rule has been installed by their rulers to save them from heartbreak and hurt, but in the process it holds them back from true happiness rather than pleasure. People's values are most of the time influenced by their religion or beliefs. People in Brave New World don't have any religion or belief system which eliminates any feelings of regret and keeps them constantly happy. The effects that rulers in the Modern and Brave New World have on their people are influenced by the things that are created specifically to keep them addicted,"Hence the obedience which is only rooted in the fear of force must be transformed into one rooted in man's heart. Man, must want and even need to obey, instead of only fearing to disobey. If this is to be achieved, power must assume the qualities of the All Good, of the All Wise, and of the All Knowing* (Erich From: Obedience as a psychological and moral problem). Erich Fromm elaborates on how people in the Modern World are manipulated easily when they love their servitude. The society in Brave New World is given soma, sex, and parties to keep them constantly content and pleased.
