The Great ‘Gatsby’ is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, an American author published in the 1920s. The novel entails a cast of characters that live a fictional life in the town of West and East Egg. The novel is set in a prosperous long island during the 1922 summer. Ideally, the novel involves a central character, Jay Gatsby, who tends to be a young and rich in a mysterious manner (Neha 371). Gatsby begins as a small and poor young boy whose love and affection for Daisy Buchanan could not be achieved without having money. Gatsby thus strives to have a cumulative mass of fortunes acquired through crime such as drug dealing. Gatsby engages in these activities to gain wealth as a way to boost the affection towards Daisy Buchanan. The lavish and extravagant life is evident from the lavish parties that he holds in the extravagant mansion near Nick’s small house. Gatsby thinks that with great riches, it will be easy to win Daisy. He even throws lavish parties with the aim of attracting Daisy to his house, but it does not materialize. Nevertheless, the illegal money inhibits the realization of his American dream as their relationship is not determined to last since the relationship cannot be more than an affair as Daisy is already, married to dream. Therefore, this scenario brings up another feature of the modernism in Gatsby’s character.

Following the initial connection with Daisy, Gatsby cannot let go of the past, and thus he is determined to build a romantic relationship with Daisy despite being married to Tom. In the modern setting, most individuals fail to let go of their past as they feel it is safer. This applies to Gatsby since it is not easy to let go of the past and thus he feels the dream of winning Daisy is safe. Gatsby tries hard to forget the past and change it if possible so that he could end up with Daisy in the end.
