New Jersey 's two senators are currently Cory Booker and Robert Menendez. The representative of the 11th District is Rodney Frelinghuysen. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez are both democrats. Rodney Frelinghuysen is a republican, which is surprising since New Jersey is primarily a democratic or blue state. Each politician has a drastically different view on policy and a unique approach to leadership. Cory Booker is brand new to the Senate and campaigned on the idea that he wants to promote change. Robert Menendez and Rodney Frelinghuysen are both veteran Washington politicians and appear to know what needs to be done at the national level. Though each of them approaches their job differently, and each has some weaknesses, they each do an admirable job representing their constituents and bringing the needs of the State of New Jersey to Washington.
New Jersey 's 11th District is a prime example of gerrymandering. New Jersey was redistricted in the 1980s and District 11 switched from the center of Essex County to the more republican Morris County. The redistricting created a heavy republican majority in the district. Based on my research, Senator Cory Booker is representing his constituents well, although it could be too early to tell. Senator Booker has focused on the key issues that New Jersey residents are facing, including transportation and healthcare. It should be noted that 12.8 percent of New Jersey residents are uninsured, 10.4 percent of New Jersey residents are living below the poverty line and New Jersey is a central hub for traffic coming in and out of New York City.
