Counter Arguments Against Charter Schools

When deciding to write an essay, it is important to pick a topic that appeals to the writer. Writers should be passionate about the topic they choose; I chose to write about charter schools. Since their inception, charter schools have been praised across the political spectrum, despite evidence that many charter schools perform worse than their public school counterparts. Growing up in a public education system, I was confident in the success of public schools, and I wanted to explore how charter schools performed. When writing my paper I wanted to focus in on the cost per student of charter school education, the quality of the education, and the overall issue with the way charter schools are run like a business. I originally chose to discuss charter schools without having a personal opinion on charter schools; I found sources that non-biased, as well as biased sources from both sides. I also made sure to acknowledge counter-arguments in my paper. Specific vocabulary included; public education and private education, education-based poverty, and enrollment terms. I considered my audience to be familiar with the public education system, and the strict oversight that accompanies public education. However, I did not expect them to know about charter schools, thus I discussed the history of charter schools and how they are managed. There was a variety of different research styles that I included into my paper. I choose both scholarly and policy based evidence for my research. Unfortunately, I realized after creating my outline that I wanted to change positions on charter schools. However, this did not require a complete rewrite of my paper, only a minor tweak. In fact, one of my strongest reasons for being pro-charter schools, the business aspect of charter schools, turned into one of the biggest reasons for me being against charter schools. I was skeptical about changing my position, because I thought it would create much more work, but was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to switch. Additionally, most of the information I collected to support charter schools was reused as part of my counter-argument. I do not think I will ever be a master of MLA 8. I think that with websites like EasyBib I can understand the certain elements of MLA 8 clearly and develop better citations that way. Having all the elements laid out in an easy-to-assemble template helps, and with the citations. I know that my ideas have been well developed in my paper because I collected my information from credible research. I also connected the information with transitional phrases that further develop my points. This paper helped me to understand charter schools, and the issues that pertain to them.
