Has one ever wondered why courage is so important? Courage allows for the ability of a person to have power to face difficulty. In the book, named Uncertain Soldier, the theme of courage is of significance. The novel takes place in 1943-1944 near the end of WWII. seventeen-year-old, Erich, a German sailor who was in Hitler's navy ended up in Canada when his boat sank and was captured by the Canadians. Erich demonstrated courage by saving another character named Max who is twelve years old. He saved him when he was on the ice on top of a river after he pulled a prank on someone named Richard and ran way. The ice started cracking, and he fell in but Erich saved him. This showed courage because it showed Erich to face challenges to be fearless and confident to step up for his right. Lastly, courage was expressed in the book because when Max went to the general store to buy three things, two for his mother and a sarsaparilla flavored candy stick for himself. He was followed by a kid named Richard from his school. Eventually Richard grabbed Max and said " Hitler doesn’t deserve candy" then after he pushed onto the ground and an RCMP officer named Constable Mason grabbed Max and said "what are you doing, boy" (Bass,29). Max replied "N-nothing. I was pushed"(Bass,29) the RCMP officer replied "don’t lie to me"(Bass,29) then sent him home. When he went home his dad had found out about what happened. Max's father questioned him on whether he caused trouble or not and Max said no. Max's father replied "Don’t lie to me!"(Bass,40) Then after he said "hold your head up and be proud". Courage was expressed by Max's father when he said "hold your head up and be proud".(Bass,41) This meant to be fearless and confident in yourself and also to stand up for yourself.
