When a person is courageous, they are doing something without fear and without wanting anything from it. In Harper Lee´s To Kill a Mockingbird the characters in the novel show courage. The book is based in the 1930s in Maycomb, Alabama, where racism towards blacks is all too common. The Finch family that consists of Atticus Finch, the father of two children named Jem Finch and Scott Finch are experiencing second-hand racism from the people around them like Tom Robinson. Atticus is Scott´s role model.
Courage has gone through many changes. It has been altered throughout races, cultures, religions, sex, and time. However, the core values of courage has always remained parallel. An example of this is given in chapter nine. In this chapter a boy named Cecil Jacobs makes fun of Scout at school because her dad was defending an African American man. Scout asks Atticus if what Cecil Jacobs said was true.
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the most significant themes is real heroes do not always use weapons. For example, one of the meanest woman to ever live, Mrs. Dubose, was a morphine addict. The addiction made her needy because she wanted to take the drug, but resisted. Mrs. Dubose was determined not to “‘leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody... she meant to break herself of [the addiction] before she died’” (60).
In To Kill a Mockingbird many of the characters showed courage. Courage means to do something that can be hard or scary. Characters that showed courage were Scout, Boo Radley, and Atticus. Scout shows courage in many different ways throughout the book.

This is a quote spoken from a courageous man who put himself in other people’s positions and did not believe he was superior to African Americans like many in that time period. The finches live in a small town called Maycomb during 1933, also known as the Great Depression era. Throughout the book, the town faces many racial discrimination issues, especially when an African American man named Tom Robinson is falsely accused of rape of a white female.
Second it can be fighting a morphine addiction god we know that is hard. Third their is hideing objects in a tree for Scout and Jem Finch, and leaveing your house when you could get in a ton of trouble for it. These are examples of courage in the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The first example of courage is Atticus Finch.
Courage is a characteristic that many people in our world lack. It is the strength to continue persevering while withstanding the difficulties, danger, and fear that may come with it. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the readers meet a family, the Finch family who are living in the 1930s. The book takes course in the span of about three years where the readers get to learn about the family as their father Atticus, took on a difficult court case.
According to Atticus, this is the ability to face adversity and go through with something honourable, even though you realize that it is impossible to win. There are quite a few characters in the book, which show some kind of courage, but there is one in particular, Atticus. Harper Lee made Atticus the hero of moral and a symbol of courage in her novel. He is the figurehead for all three kinds of courage I mentioned. For one he confronts a rabid dog, which displays physical courage.

It is told through the perspective of a young and impressionable girl named Scout who experiences a variety of significant events based on a time period of segregation and gender roles.
“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Although sometimes acceptable, this saying is often a very bad idea. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, some circumstances arise in which this saying would definitely not work. Even so, it can prove difficult not “joining ‘em,” and it can take a lot of bravery. There are numerous examples in this book, but three people are especially courageous.
"Jem, I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. " This insightful statement was told by Atticus Finch to his son, Jem Finch. Many people in Maycomb had to deal with racism, hatred, and discrimination because of their skin color or because of the court case.
In the book Jem shows courage by doing things others are too scared to do. “Jem was not one to dwell on past defeats: it seemed the only message he got from Atticus was insight into the art of cross examination.” (Lee, 51). This quote shows that Jem has the courage to keep going on even though he as been defeated. Also shows how he can lead people with his courage.
Atticus displayed courage by putting his life on the line and killing the rabies infected dog as well as standing up for Tim Robinson when no one else would. Like Atticus, Jem displayed a great amount of courage when he touched the Radley house and by defending Scout against Mr. Ewell. Scout showed courage by putting herself before a lynch mob ,in the process she saved both Atticus and Tom Robinson, as well as walking Boo Radley home .This instantaneous bravery that arises within a person in dangerous or threatening situations helps people step out of their comfort zones for the better.
