Creationism In Public Schools

1062 Words5 Pages

Fundamentalist Creationists do not stop at just asking for Creationism to be taught in public schools, as mentioned before, sometimes they turn to extremes. First, it is beneficial to understand the basis on which Creationists attempt to discredit science. One of the most common misconceptions from Creationism is that it’s a suitable scientific alternative to the evolutionary theory. There is no credible reason that a public school system should replace a science, backed by evidence, with a religious philosophy on which it’s foundation is purely faith. Clarence Darrow, a lawyer, and the leader of the American Civil Liberties Union sums it up pretty well, by stating:
“If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach it in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools. […] At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers. […] Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. […] After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flaming banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth century”
