Prostitution occurs when an individual engages in a sexual relationship for a certain fee. Its existence is widespread historically as well as geographically. However, the legality of prostitution has been widely debated, some saying that it should be a legal career and others denouncing it as a criminal offence deserving punishment. Although it is not legal in most of the world, it should not be anywhere in the world for religious as well as safety reasons. Firstly, the health of the people who are involved in the act may pose health risks for the country at large, causing a pandemic. The people who engage in this act are breaching a commandment set forth by God. “And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.” (Genesis 38:24, King James Bible). The preceding biblical verse shows the severity of this sin. Lansdown (2007) acknowledges that God forbids any woman to be a prostitute and insists that a prostitute disgusts God by quoting from the bible “When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust” (Ezekiel 23:17-18, King James Bible). God is, or should be, for those who don’t consider Him to be so, our moral source for the laws He sets are for our individual and communal well-being. In fact, God set a boundary between two people of opposite sex to prevent them from having intercourse. This boundary is marriage. SolasCPC (2013) stresses that sex should only take place within a marriage between a man and a woman. Lucas points out that sex should only take place within a marriage. God doesn’t allow two individuals to have premarital relationships. “scripture highly approves of sexual intimacy between a man and a woman for the purposes of pleasure, love and procreation, provided they have committed themselves to one another in the covenant of marriage” (Lansdown 1). Prostitutes can also damage families and provide opportunities for unfaithfulness, “She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.” (Proverbs 23:28, King James Bible). Moreover sex is, in essence, a gift from God to married individuals, thus one cannot use it for lustful and more prominently, financial purposes.
