Critical Reflection 1 Link work session. This was my first link work session. I am using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle to illustrate my link work. The reason why I chose to use Gibbs is because Gibbs reflective cycle enables me to think systematically about the different stages of the link work and to consider the positive and the negative aspects of the link work and what the action plan will be. Phase 1 – Description My link work is with a 17 years old young man Peter (Pseudonym) who came into Mathew Wigglesworth House following several incidents of domestic abuse and a hostile relationship with his parents. The first issue is, Peter appeared to be a very respectful, calm and focus young man contrary to what I read in his notes about him. I started the link work session with an open minded approach but keeping in mind the historical evidence. I quickly understood the historical evidence does not always reflect the present situation. Rogers (1977) humanistic perspective recognises the importance of self-seeking personal growth to concentrate on the service user’s situation 'here and now' rather than on the history of the service users problems. Furthermore, one of the core value of the HCPC code of practice is for social workers to adhere to non-judgemental practice towards service users. According to Trevithick, (2012) in order to understand service user and their world of meaning, we have to acknowledge our ignorance of the service users and their social world. However, this will involve learning to ask good question that will enable the service user to provide detail or sufficient information and also good observation to provide us with some clues. My second issue was not to dis-empower him or make him feel overwhelmed with lots of information so I used my professional judgement and decided to split the agenda of the link work session into two different link work session to address the issues. Communication is a very important skill when working with young people. According to the department of health (2002), students must undertake communication skills with children, adults and people with particular communication needs. Also, communication is very important because it is through effective communication skills that social workers are able to gather information about service users, undertake assessments, interviews, engaged in problem solving and decision making (Trevithick, 2012). I was able to communicate with Peter in an anti-oppressive manner and make him feel relaxed and at ease to open up and talk to
