Critical Reflection on Physical and Mental Health
Coming from a large family and seeing many family members age, I have found that dementia and depression is a prevalent issue among older adults. The older generation is incredibly large this time around, so the issue has grown larger (World Health Organization, 2017). After doing some research, I have come to realize that the consequences of dementia and depression are much larger than just being forgetful or sad all the time.
The first strategy to addressing the situation is to diagnose the symptoms. There are many symptoms that many of us may feel when we are having a bad day, like sadness, lack of motivation, and loss of appetite. But the more important symptoms to recognize are suicidal thoughts, memory issues, neglecting of personal care, and of course, alcohol and drug usage (Robinson, Smith, and Segal, 2017).

A cause could be a medical condition like Parkinson’s or Cancer, but it is incredibly important to remember that because older adults are older they are more likely to face death amongst their friends and family. This is a cause that not all of us have faced, so we do not recognize the harsh reality it presents. With age comes the feeling of being a burden or unworthy, which is never the case. An individual should not ever feel this way, especially because they are simply going through a final stage of development in their lives.
