Thomson Ng Professor Huynh English 1C 20 September, 2017 Underlying emotional damage The psychoanalysis from the book “Critical Theory Today” by Tyson, has shown varities of viewpoints if it were applied to the book, WE by Yevgeny Zamyatin. The book is narrated by a citizen of One State, D-503, and it shows how he begins to change his viewpoint of his world. Comparing the Tyson’s idea of core issues and the story of WE, the book shows plentiful of negative emotions. All of the core issues begin within the utopian city called One State; A city that is thought to be perfected, logical, and superieur. We can compare the idea of D-503’s ideology of his mathematician mindset and his viewpoint of his world. To start off, D-503 finds that square root of negative one as an unsolvable mystery. He says, “ I don’t want the square root of negative one! Take square root of negative one out of me! (37).” He upholds his value as the Builder of the Integral in One State and prefers mathematical figures. The idea of mathematics involves logical steps that leads to a final answer, yet in contrast to having him creating a self-made answer. This is D-503’s only logical perspective senses of his world. In another word, when there is logical aspect, there is also the opposite; illogical. The square root of negative one is the cancerous or a disease in D-503’s world to the point that he uses it to compare others with, if he happens to dislike them. This also branches off and applies to infinity, too. Infinity is a concept of no endings but is applied in any position of continuous changes. The City have a stable supplies of food and water in which allows the civilization not to revolt and fight over, if they were any shortages. The primal instinct of a human being involves natural tendency to live exists despite the emotionless robotic behavior in the One State. There are also sex days included to suppress the human natural instincts. However, the sex days contributes to the psychological damage within the citizens of One State. Sex is a sacred aspect in the Ancient culture. It is believe that if two beings were to be together for their lifetime, the development of emotions are created between the two. As a result, this creates an emotional and physical attachments. Tyson says the fear of intimacy is an overwhelming feeling of emotional closeness that were believe that it would hurt of oneself, thus would result in keeping an emotional distance from others at all times (Tyson 6). In the book WE, many citizens were assigned to multiple of sex partners in order to satisfied one part of their instinct. The reason why they were assigned with multiples because it creates less emotional attachment and satisfies the tension of individuals. If one citizens were to stay with and only one partner, then emotions begin to develop. D-503 was no exceptions of this scenario, as he had was attracted to I-330.
