On special occasions, you can find Guatemalans celebrating by eating a delicious dessert called Tres Leches Cake. Tres Leches Cake translates to “three milks cake” in English and is named after the main ingredients: three different types of milk. To make this dessert, you prepare a sponge cake using the usual flour, sugar, eggs, (etc.) and bake it in the oven. After it’s baked and cooled, you poke small holes into the cake and pour on top the mixture containing the evaporated milk, condensed milk, and whipped cream (the three milks). Once the cake has absorbed the milk mixture, spread on top some whipped cream and serve it.

The book, Gym Candy, was written by Carl Deuker. Although as little as I read, he is my favorite author of all time. I really enjoyed reading this book for a few reasons. For one, I could relate to what Mick, the main character, was going through. Throughout Gym Candy, I really enjoyed how intense the story would become at times.

What inspired Carl to write the book Gym Candy was he wanted his readers to see through the eyes of a football star, he wants to show the readers that how the football star got into doing drug to be better at football. Also to show people the bad things and also show the punishments of you using the drugs gets you. The theme of this book is that “Drugs changes people”. The reason this theme fits this novel is because in this book there is a boy named Mick Johnson he wanted to be the best football player ever played.

Laurel, the narrator of ZZ Packer’s short story “Brownies”, experiences different complexities of relations between whites and blacks during her fourth grade Brownie Troop’s camping trip at Camp Crescendo. Through the idea of groupthink, Packer reaches the revelation of dehumanizing and the perpetuation of marginalization of all racial groups. In the college essay “Chunky Peanut Butter” by James Gregory his writing shows characteristics that makes him equipped for the open online courses. The characteristics are leadership, being open-minded, and always being prepared to any work given to him. These traits is why I think he is the most capable for MOOC.
In the short story “Brownies,” ZZ Packer develops a theme of “there is often more to something than what meets the eye” by making it so that although there was a predominant leader of the Brownie troop, Laurel acted as the true leader and was not afraid to go against the crowd. When the Brownies were putting their plan against the Troop 909 girls into action, Daphne decides to stay behind, and Laurel was “gonna stay, too” (Packer). Despite the fact that every girl in the troop but one was going, Laurel chose not to follow the crowd and tag along just for the sake of fitting in, which takes courage to do, showing that she is more of a leader than a follower. Later in the story, the girls were outside, waiting for their cue to burst into the bathroom.
