Have you ever read “Made in China” on a product? A vast majority of the United States has seen this before, but why is that? Many goods are produced between the U.S. and China daily. As a result of this partnership, there can be numerous complications in the transaction of business. Cultural differences have a significant effect on the international business relations between the Chinese and Americans, as well as make the difficulties of beginning an international business venture in China greater. What is culture? An individual’s culture is constructed by their surroundings. Culture may include religion, language, values, cuisine and traditions. All of these aspects of culture vary from place to place and greatly influence business. Taoism is the belief that everything within the universe flows with an indescribable force called the Tao. Tao translates as “The Way” in the English language. Taoists worship many gods and believe that everything is one despite outward appearances. This could be beneficial, because if the businessmen know that the foreign company believes that everything is one, and then he or she could emphasize the teamwork their company possesses during a presentation or meeting. Confucianism is another religion that is prominent in Chinese culture. The Confucians believe that every individual should act with virtue in all social matters; including state, community, kingdom, and family. Confucius was the founder of this philosophy and wrote the Analects. The Analects are a combination of different books that lead Confucians in their guide to carrying virtuous lives.
