Confucianism - what is it? Confucianism, or known as Ruism, is an ancient system of teachings about philosophy and ethics found by Confucius and later developed by his discipline Mencius. This system is an organized religion of optimistic humanism and has had a monumental impact on the life, social structure, and political philosophy of China. Rather than just a religion like Christianity or Buddhism, Confucianism primarily and fundamentally deals with moral behavior, ethical living and is regularly characterized as an ethical framework such as emphasizing the ideas of human's love, ancestor worship, respect for parents, and harmony in thought. He was a forceful educator, philosopher and political figure in China for both of his axioms and models of social connections. Because Confucius wanted to reinforce the societal values of compassion and tradition, his social philosophy was based on the principle of love in humanity (ren) while exercising his political beliefs based on self-discipline. Ren is described, in The Analects of Confucius, as "a comprehensive ethical virtue: benevolence, humaneness, goodness" (Eno, Robert, The Analects of Confucius, 2.2 Version, 2015), while in Mencius, the term "humanity" (ren) restrictively means "care and concern for others, rooted strongly in family love, but extending towards others in varying degrees of strength, which may be increased through a regimen of ethical self-cultivation" (Eno, Robert, Mencius, 1.0 Version, May 2016). The concept of Ren expresses through human connections and, especially, the most sacred and significant relationship between parents and child. In Book 1, Mencius mentioned in his conversation with the Majesty that "never has a man of humanity abandoned his parents" (Eno, Robert, Mencius, 1.0 Version, May 2016). Ren is a sense of dignity of human being which is a feeling of humaneness towards others and self-esteem. Humanity (ren) is the foundation of all human connections and, according to Confucianism, this principle is the ultimate guideline to one's actions. Similar to filial piety (xiao) is a root of humanity, ritual (li) also has a connection with ren in which The Master says, "If a man is not ren, what can he do with li?"
