Throughout history culture and cuisine have went hand in hand. Certain historical factors as well as cultural beliefs could play a part in the types of foods one may eat. Location also plays a role in this. If a specific country or region of that country is located near another country or region then overlap of specific things could occur. Similarities appear to be present as well as differences. Within this paper I will discuss the culture as well as cuisine from southern France which is the regional areas of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, French Riviera and Languedoc-Roussillon. To start, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur alone has much history. In the 5th Century they were successfully invaded by the Visigoths, Burgundians and Ostrogoths (Gitelink, 2015). They then came under Frankish power in 536 by their Merovingien dynasty which was the first royal French house and first to have political authority following the collapse of the Roman Empire not integrated with the rest of France (Gitelink, 2015). Following that, the great Carolingian rulers made Frankish rule effective in Provence (French-at-a-Touch.com, 2015). The great Carolingian rulers then collapsed and a series of kingdoms were set up between France and Germany (Gitelink, 2015). In 1113, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur was ruled by the Spanish for more than a century (Gitelink, 2015). From 1245 to 1482, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur was ruled by the house of Anjou (Gitelink, 2015). After that, in 1486 it was annexed to the French Kingdom until the French Revolution in 1787 but then thereafter re-annexed to the French Kingdom in 1860 (Gitelink, …show more content…

Following that, Charlemagne invaded in the late 700’s (French-at-a-Touch.com, 2015).
