Reflective Essay: Diversity In Canada

As mentioned I 've been exposed to diversity from a young age. I 've moved with family across Canada twice, from poverty stricken to affluent areas. From towns where you could leave doors unlocked to city blocks where gunshots a few streets over are your lullyby. Family still live outside the Oka reserve in Quebec and I 've French-Canadian relatives in New Brunswick.

While through my friends, neighbors, family and the people I 've worked with I 've had interactions with people from all around the world, from different educational and cultural backgrounds, social standings, religious and sexual orientations. The markets in Toronto, Vancouver, San Fransico, and Montreal, after all, are phenomenal for the diversity of patrons and ethnic foods. While

Though aimed at Americans the ideology is not far off from that employed by aboriginals in Canada.

I have also worked as a Special Constable in a Mental Health Hospital where staff were expected to employ non-violent techniques to de-estlcate situations. I was specifically stationed out of Forensic Psychiatric Unit for the Criminally Insane where I had interactions with cannibals and serial rapists. It was public knowledge that a gentleman dubbed the "Greyhound Killer" was housed in this unit.

However, my experience also included the numerous patients, such as those with acquired brain injury or accute mental illness as well as Alzheimers, housed throughout the facility. I dealt with people who spat, clawed and bit and learnt first hand how extremely unpredictable people with mental illness can be.
