Cummins Inc. is my chosen organization, as I have worked there for the past 12 years. Cummins is a global corporation made up of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute, and service diesel engines, natural gas engines, and related technologies, which include power generation systems, fuel systems, filtration, and emission solutions. Cummins was established in 1919 and is headquartered in Columbus, Indiana. They employ approximately 55,000 employees worldwide. They operate 600 company-owned and independent distributor locations and have created a network of approximately 7,200 dealer locations. As a result of this growth, there is a need to review and adapt existing processes. With regards to mobile devices, there are different practices within different business units and functions. There is a strong need for consistency and clarity. Furthermore, the devices offered today need to be reviewed and assessed to ensure they meet the company’s technological philosophy, while enhancing employee productivity and work-life balance. By establishing a standard policy, the company’s utilization of devices is expected to improve. This could relate to potential savings for the company. In addition, the process must be more equitable and clear to employees, which will ultimately create more employee satisfaction. First, it is aimed to improve communication coverage and capability. Second, it will likely have a positive impact on employee satisfaction and retention. Third, it should aim to better control mobile device costs and lead to reduced expenses.

Six Sigma projects at Cummins are defined by and directly relate to the company goals that are defined for the year. This project has been identified as a key initiative that must be completed this year. It is anticipated that the project will be completed by the August timeframe. This supports the review of company contracts that will be reassessed by the end of the year. Ideally, the project will produce a policy that can be implemented to drive consistency across the business in the United States. All business units and functions will need to adapt their current process to follow the new proposed policy. In addition, the policy will be more comprehensive than what exists today so that employees have more clarity on mobile device guidelines.
