What do you think when you hear the name Cummins? Most people think power, torque and reliability. Cummins is a very common name in the diesel world. Dodge and Cummins began their partnership 25 solid years ago, longer than some marriages in this century. Let me take you on an adventure of the history of Cummins, B-series Cummins, as well as the 12 Valve, as well as the 24 Valve engines. Clessie Lyle Cummins was born December 27th 1888, in the state of Indiana a country boy he was a self-taught mechanic with a dream. In 1919 Cummins went a familiar investor named W.G. Irwin who had already invested money in Mr. Cummins for and auto mechanic and machine shop. Cummins took the Design of Rudolf Diesel’s Engine and made it his own. After years …show more content…
1994 was a big year for dodge and Cummins, this year diesel emission regulations would be imposed by the government, and the 12 Valve would go from having a classic rotary pump to an intercooled P7100 pump; the reason for the pump change was for lower emissions. This pump was more precise fuel and timing control which made it more efficient but leaving the power and producing less smoke. But soon after this pump was introduced it would be replaced with a VE44 pump, due to the mechanical malfunction of the P7100 pump. The 12 Valve was in the era of the square body style which is referred to as a first generation. Currently the first gen is highly sought after by young Cummins enthusiast. In 1998 Dodge was in the works of making a new body style. 1998 was a half year so it came out with a new body style as well as a new engine. Cummins fans would soon refer to this particular model ’98.5 would be known as the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail is best described as the 12valve Cummins, with a 5 speed transmission, 4 wheel drive, with a second generation body style. The owner would have all of the perks of owning the new dodge body style, as well as all of the room, but the reliability and power of the older 12 valve engine. The other half of ‘98 the government was still pushing for lower emission for diesel engines. This is when Cummins released the 24 …show more content…
The 24 valve can easily be recognized by the solid valve cover, rather the 6 individual covers like it older relative the 12 valve. The 24 Valve was put into the Second generation’s body style. This body style was equipped with power windows; it was 4 door vehicles with a back seat as well as many other perks. The 24 valve was equipped with an electronic fuel pump this pump had a computer for the brain. To some the Bosch VP44 was considered to be a terrible pump, if the vehicle didn’t have a suitable lift pump; the VP44 would be starved of fuel. The fuel pumps electronic brain needed to be cooled by excess fuel the lift pump would provide to the VP44. When the lift pump went out the owner would have no idea until it was already too late, because instead of the truck dying the VP44 would still pull fuel from the fuel tank. Making the truck sputter and run very rough. There were a lot of aftermarket systems to help aid this fuel system but nothing that would last as long as the Cummins engine. Some trucks were sentenced to death at the junk yard after the VP44 had died and some were saved and given a second chance. This gift of life given by the old VE44 pump these trucks would be known as a P-pumped 24 Valve. There are still many second gens on the road today, and most have been equipped with a P-pump. The P-pumped 24 valve is a highly sought out by many Cummins enthusiast
