Curfew “You never let me go anywhere!” I shout to my mom. “You do stuff all the time,” my mom answers. “I just don’t want you out there at midnight.” “You’re so unfair. Everyone gets to stay out past midnight. Can’t I have one more hour?” I beg. The fight about a curfew is a constant one at my house, and many others in America. Although I would like my freedom and time to hang out with my friends, I secretly agree that curfews are a smart idea. Parents should set curfews to make sure teens have enough sleep. As a teenager myself I can say that I don’t get enough sleep. On an average day teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. For example, “typical curfews require that teenagers under 17 years stay out of streets starting from 11pm or midnight. This is believed to protect them from crimes being committed after nightfall. As well as violating the law, and there exist serious evidence in favor of this conviction. Another example is when New Orleans enabled a dusk till dawn curfew in 1994, the rates of juvenile crime were reported to fall more than 20 percent. The crime rate among teens is proven to go down when curfews are enforced among teenagers(“SIOWfal5”). Even if your teen is not always at an increased risk of engaging in a criminal activity late at night, her risk of being exposed to crime or becoming a victim of it the chance increases. Teens having a curfew help control gang activity by reducing the opportunities for gang members to gather, which helps cut down on the act of violent and drug related crimes. Anytime your ten is out when crimes are committed the ups of her chances of being exposed to it. This also includes burglary, theft and vandalism. A curfew gets her home where she is safe and keeps her away from other teens that are doing illegal
