Background
Custom Molds, Inc. is a fabricator of custom-designed molds that are used in injection molding machines to make plastic parts. One of their major customers comes from the Electronics industry where large volumes of plastic connectors are used and sold. Recently, there has been a shift in its market as the total demand for molds has declined, but the good thing is the requests for molded parts have increased. To expand their operations, Custom Molds, Inc. is going to include the manufacture of plastic parts.

Custom Molds competitive priorities pertain to producing high quality molds and parts that meet exact specifications. Although they have been great at this for decades, another priority has been giving them difficulty recently. Changes in the industry have led to electronic manufacturers developing partnerships with parts suppliers in order to ensure timely delivery of high quality, cost-effective parts. This coincides with the increase of larger order sizes, but a decline in overall orders. These factors culminate to cause a problem for Custom Molds. Even though there are less orders for plastic parts, the larger order sizes mean that Custom Molds has to produce more than they are accustomed to. When they first started producing parts, they only made them in limited quantities for research and development efforts. Coinciding with the industry trend, they have basically been forced into making more parts to still be an asset to electronics manufacturers. This added workload has been stressing the company and causing problems with delivery times. Delivery times are another competitive priority for Custom Molds due to the industry they are in.
