Picture this, you get home from a long day at school and you pull out your phone only to discover serval mean texts and posts about you from an anonymous user. Now think about this happening to you every day. Think about how that would wear you out a push you to your breaking point. Sadly, this is the life of many students all over the world who are cyberbullied. Students who are cyberbullied are more likely to skip school, use alcohol or drugs, have poor grades, low self-esteem, and health problems. Cyberbullying if often worse than traditional bullying because it can happen wherever and whenever. Also people often bully off anonymous profiles so it’s very hard to trace the source of the bully. According to the article Scientific Blogging, “78% of adolescents who committed suicide were bullied both at home and online.” (Cyberbullying Does Not Cause’ Teen Suicide). Obviously, 78% of the students who committed suicide after being cyberbullied is a very large number and shows that cyberbullying is a direct cause of suicide. This means only 22% of suicide was not caused by any type of bullying. This shows that cyberbullying negatively affects many students. To students, the answer to all this is hate and bullying is too often suicide. Proving, that cyberbullying is not just a minor problem in schools it’s a major problem that should be eliminated. Some people might say that cyberbullying only effects a student’s life at home, but cyberbullying effects a student’s learning just as much. An article from stopbullying.gov voiced, “Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn.” (Illinois anti-Bullying laws & Policy).This shows that cyberbullying is no longer just picking on someone it is a serious issue that can lead to failing classes, dropped grades, and maybe even dropping out of school.
