“Flowers for Algernon” is a book written by Daniel Keyes, about a man named Charlie Gordon, who is unintelligent. The main characters are Charlie, Alice, Rose, Algernon, Dr. Strauss, Professor Nemur, Mr. Donner, Frank, Joe, and Gimpy. Charlie is the main character, who works at the bakery and goes to school to increase his knowledge, and later gets surgery to increase his IQ. Alice is his teacher, she helps Charlie get chosen for the surgery. Rose is Charlie’s mom, who abused him when he was young. She later sent him off to Warren State Home, a foster home for kids. Algernon is the lab mouse that races Charlie in the maze. He eventually starts biting people and not eating, and later dies. Dr. Strauss is the neurologist and psychiatrist who performs the operation on Charlie, and does therapy sessions with him. He is very unintelligent. To solve this problem, he gets a surgery to increase his IQ. The surgery worked, and he was extremely smart. However, he finds out that his co-workers aren’t really his friends. He realizes that they all make fun of him, and he soon stops doing stupid things, and this makes them hate him. They start hurting him. He becomes depressed, and has suicidal thoughts. He does not sleep. The resolution is when the surgery soon wears off, and returns him back to normal. Algernon dies soon after, and the book ends with Charlie asking if you could put some flowers on Algernon’s grave. The setting of the book is New York. The time period is some time in the 1960’s. Yes, I would recommend this book. This book is a crucial read for everyone. This book is interesting and enjoyable. The audience that the novel is geared towards is young adults & teenagers, as it talks about puberty, friendship, and enjoying life as is. Overall, this book is a great one, it teaches important life lessons, and is a fun book to
