Dashiell Hammett Dashiell Hammett was born on May 27, 1894; furthermore, he passed away on January 10, 1961. Dashiell had written a countless amount of fascinating short stories, even without having a significant amount of educational experiences. Dashiell Hammett became a sergeant for the U.S.A. Army Ambulance Corps in 1918. One year after Dashiell left the Army, he was hospitalized for pulmonary tuberculosis in 1920. Dashiell had the disease for one year, and had to leave his family so he wouldn’t not pass on the disease to his daughter or wife. When he was cured from the disease he went out to work on a farm to obtain the knowledge of agricultural Dashiell was a self-motivated person that was always intrigued in having many jobs and always working hard. Those jobs included being a freight clerk, stevedore, timekeeper, yardman, and a railroad worker. Since he left the public school he had many short-term jobs and therefore he became an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1915. He then went on to join then army when he was 24 and became a sergeant serving in World War II. He stayed in the army only one year and when her was released he became a politician. Becoming a screen writer allowed Dashiell to express himself in a creative way and helped him learn the basics of writing that would further his knowledge in his writing career.
