He strived for equal education rights and the full freedom of former slaves. Washington wanted an education more than ever. He would tell his mother he would do anything to go to school and learn. When he was old enough for college, he left on a wagon and set off for Hampton Institute. He soon ran out of travel money, so he slept under bridges and walked all the way there. When the sun rose, he got up and walked over 30 miles a day just to get an education. When he got there, he could not afford college, so he made a deal with the dean. This deal was to let him study there and he would work as a janitor for free. He worked five hours before school and two hours after school. As a young man, he still strived for great things. As Booker T. Washington grew into his later adult years, he accomplished greater things. He became a teacher with a degree from Hampton Institute. After graduating, he taught children during the day and adults at night. Some might say he was “tasked” with this little negro school, but Booker T. Washington called it “blessed”.
