Black Wall Street and Booker T. Washington are both significant and have done a lot for not just African American history, but African American economic history as well. They’ve each had their own respective impacts in the communities, and each left a lasting positive impact on the community. Today I’ll be talking about the the topic of Booker T. Washington, African American success on Wall Street, as well as the violence involved in it, and the lasting impact it has had on the African American communities. Booker T. Washington was born on April 5th, 1856, and was a teacher, author, orator, and a prominent figure in the African American community. Booker T.’s philosophy consisted of economic independence, self-reliance, and higher education for African Americans. Booker T. largely believed that economic empowerment is what was needed for African Americans to be able to advance in many fields. This quote shows what was important to Booker T. and what he believed was key to uplift the African American community, not just financially, but as well as mentally. Washington believed that economic empowerment was essential for racial uplift and advocated for African Americans to focus on practical skills and entrepreneurship to advance within the existing social structure. His Tuskegee Institute became a model for vocational education, training African Americans in trades and agriculture. Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Black Wall Street first came into the scene in the African American community in the early 20th century.
