Lisa Wade's American Hookup is an insightful read that focuses on sexual lives of young adults in America today. Lisa wade book is based on data gathered via her own interviews with college students she had in her classes, and on other results from researchers. The data offers both an interesting and worrying picture of the culture and feelings of college students of today. Much of the author's major purpose to focus on the fun sexual freedom of hooking up and how it goes against gender equality in which there are double standards for men and women. Although the media like to emphasize the crazy sex culture of college students Wade talks about how students today are less happy and healthy than in previous generations.
The book Night by Elie Wiesel teaches many different lessons about the human nature, human condition, and society. Elie is a boy that grew up in Sighet, Transylvania (present day Romania) during the time that the Nazi’s and Adolf Hitler came to power. After being placed in ghettos, the Jews of Sighet eventually got shipped off to the concentration camps, the first being Auschwitz/Birkenau. When the Jews first arrived at these camps, they made sure to keep their friends and family close, as well as they looked out for eachother. After months passed by, many began to grow weak due to the lack of food and the harsh conditions that they faced.
In the movie “The Loving Story”, the director Nancy Buirski presents a story about love and fight for the right of interracial marriage and social justice. In 1958, a white man whose name Richard Loving and his black fiancée Mildred Jeter travelled from Virginia to Washington to get married in a time when interracial marriage was illegal in most of the states in the United States including Virginia, according to the movie. However, the director shows that Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested in Virginia when they came back for violating a Virginia law that forbidden marriage between people of different races. Michael Leibowitz, a writer for the New York Times voices her own concern for secular dating in her article “Dating is Dead. Going Retro Can Fix It”. Leibowitz’s vast use of figurative language and shared empathy shine new hope upon those searching for real meaningful relationships by introducing the idea of integrating traditional dating values within the modern dating climate. Michele uses informal diction and various forms of metaphors in order to create a painted idea of how modern-day dating should be, in terms of praising traditional dating while critiquing secular dating.
In Jon Krakauer’s book “Into the Wild,” there is a big emphasis on relationships between people—especially between Chris McCandless and his companions—that influence their decision-making and what ultimately happens to them. Chris’ friendships with people he meets after leaving Emory for good can be analyzed through his letters to them, as well as their own accounts of how Chris affected them. Chris became close to many wanderers and travelers, not only because he wanted to get to Alaska, but also because of their personalities.
