At least once in one’s life they will hear the phrase, “It is not what you know, but who you know,” and in many cases this true. Through an anthropologic sense, that phrase is an example of human capital and social capital. Human capital is what you know whereas social capital is who you know. In addition, when it comes to human capital, one is institutionalized in a certain way for a specific task/job, and this usually starts at a young age either consciously or nonconsciously. The sociologist Robert Putnam argues that the “erosions of social capital” in America are contributing to social isolation, a lack of social connectedness (one’s ability to connect to other individuals for beneficial resources) and civic engagement (one’s ability to be involved in issues that affect a community). Social capital is the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society, enabling that society to function efficiently. I think that families that are poor can 't really do much about the places they live in, more so wealthier families can live in mansions but also still be in debt. Its difficult to actually know which family is better off. Some families that are poor get a lot of free things life lunches at school and wealthier kids treat poor kids differently when it comes to certain things and that is not right at all. And schools and other facilities should look more into discussing things so that it won’t be that was anymore.
Typically most racial minorities tend to be on the lower end of the social status. The connection that health has with the social status is that there is not enough money to pay for healthy foods and doctors. Also if you are on the lower end of the social status then you usually don't have a great job which means there are lower health benefit's from work. If someone is high in social status that means that they will have more money, a better job, and also better health. Someone who is high on the scale will be able to pay for healthier foods, gym memberships, and even the health care that they might need.
It is evident that young people’s experiences in second level education is moulded by the various capital forms. Bourdieu highlights four different types of capital- economic capital, cultural capital, social capital and symbolic capital. Cultural capital, social capital and emotional capital will be discussed in detail throughout this essay. Although Bourdieu doesn’t mention emotional capital he gives us a clear understanding of the other forms of capital and how they are interlinked. Bourdieu contemplates a process which one form of capital can be transformed into another’ (Bourdieu, 1986).
