1990’s took the world of typography into storm. Graphic design was never the same after that. Things were messy. It was the time of thick and heavy texts with different effects like blurred, placed extremely close to each other and played around. Every poster and work of art had splashes of paints on them. The unique style of typography was grunge. David Carson is the graphic designer who introduced this style and is considered as the Godfather of Grunge. His style was very unique which the world had never seen. He knew how to express any concept using only type. Type became his tool to explore the blank white paper. The way he placed letters were very different and attractive, which made them great. He rejected the typical type layouts and experimented with different fonts.
David Carson was born in Corpus Christi, Texas and spent most of his early life in southern California. He did his graduation in Sociology from San Diego State University. He came in contact with graphic design in a two week workshop at the University of Arizona. He later attended the Oregon College of Commercial Art for a couple of months.
