I attended the National FFA Convention in October of 2016. There, I listened to the Keynote Speaker Diana Nyad. She is the famous long-distance swimmer who swam for 53 total hours from Florida to Cuba. Her speech was held at the Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. On October 19, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. is when I listened to a speech that would make a huge impact on not only me, but many other students in the FFA.
Melissa Jeanette “Missy” Franklin is a Canadian-American competitive swimmer and is a five-time Olympic gold medalist. Missy Franklin should be remembered because she swims for the USA Olympic team showing great pride representing her country in the sport that she has a tremendous love. Also she is very encouraging to young adults and kids everywhere to follow their dreams, and she also puts a stand on her thought about bullying and what you could do to stop it. Even at age 22 she is still active with her swimming career and is training for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan at the “ New National Stadium”.
“You two, get the ball down the pool and take a shot, just make sure it’s inbounds, don’t worry if you miss the goal, Kenzie will get the rebound.” My coach has barked these orders on numerous occasions throughout the year and it has never failed to give me a little thrill inside. As an athlete that tends to go unnoticed, getting acknowledgement in such an offhand way is pretty exciting. It shows me I have a place on the team, a job that my team depends on me to do. Water polo is a very difficult sport.
Kate Smith, the Aquatic Supervisor, has to decide if switching to the new Red Cross Swim program is the right choice. Additionally, she must deal with ongoing parent pressuring and complaints towards the current program and staff. Lastly, with a limited marketing budget, she must effectively market the different programs John Rhodes has to offer to increase capacity during the off-peak hours in the summer evenings (Matthews et al., n.d.). After my swimming, I have to go to work. It can be tough.” Temple University swim coach Ted Unangst understands that practices can be hard to attend, considering they are late at night. He normally gets on his swimmers for missing practice, but will is a special
On January 18th, 2015, two men riding their bikes to a party at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house in Stanford, California when they saw what appeared to be a couple having sex. The two men, Peter Jonsson and Carl-Fredrik Arndt, noticed that the woman looked asleep or unconscious and that “something looked weird” about the situation. After confrontation, the suspected assailant moved away from the woman and began running away from the area. They asked the victim, Emily Doe, if she was okay, but she was unresponsive. Arndt and Jonsson then chased after Turner, pinning him down for a few minutes until the officers arrived.
I squinted at the podium from my seat in the middle of the tennis courts at Franklin Middle School, while the glistening sun sheltered me that June day. The principal, in a shouting voice, exclaimed, “The 2012-2013 Franklin Middle School Treuchet-Crumbaugh Citizenship Award goes to… Grant Zangwill.” I, along with every other eyeball in attendance, looked at myself. In an instant, I relived countless moments of middle school. Earlier that morning, I had won the Physical Education Department’s Sportsmanship Award but there was something different, something more special, about this one.
I knew that for the next two hours I didn’t have to worry about my essay that I haven’t started or the drama my friends made that day. I knew the only thing I had to focus on was playing, and I knew I was able to do that. I recall even on the worst of days I would get into the water, swimming aggressively, and shooting the ball like I was trying to take off the goalies head, but not even thirty minutes into a practice you would see a giant smile on my face. Playing made me so happy, and I knew that no matter what challenge I was facing I could go to water polo to clear my head, and give me a place to just let it all
The only noise that matters is a loud, automated beep. This starts the clock and initiates us to propel ourselves off the block and immerse into the water. Adrenaline coursed through me; my entire psyche focused on the task of sprinting across the pool and completing the four laps before anyone else. I had no idea where any other swimmer was in the pool, and I was only able to gauge my speed by how fiercely my arms and legs burned with every stroke. I was aware that I was going fast, and when the final wall loomed, I fully extended my arms and hit the pad with the tips of my outstretched fingers.
We learned that even if you look like you have it all going for you, most of the time there is something deep within someone that others don’t know. I didn’t know that our Student Council president who graduated with a 4.0 who was also our star football player, star hockey player, and even state champion in two sports, football and track, still feels that his father isn’t proud of him. It 's depressing that we waited almost 12 years to find out each other 's hardships, at that point it was too late to fully help each other out. With all of the time I spent in school, attending class, co-curricular events, and even volunteering with my peers. I am proud to say that I am a St. Mary’s Springs Academy alumnus.
One of those changes was that Coach Savanna, my favorite coach, was gone. She was the driving force of our team and pushed us harder and harder in swimming. Unfortunately, we all had known she was nearing the danger zone of eighteen, where all of our coaches typically leave us for four years or more. Now that she was gone, we could only hope she would
Before we move on to the future, we shall remember and cherish our past. This year was my first year at Solana Ranch and as a new kid, I didn’t know the traditions of this school. As important events, such athletic or leadership events, have taken place, I have had supportive friends along my side to teach me.
The basic skills you will need in synchronised swimming is sculling and treading water with a kick called the "eggbeater". There are also many positions that you can learn to combine into a routine. Additionally, there is an element known as “lifts” in synchronised swimming, where swimmers create a structure of sorts with their bodies and lift themselves from the water in the same formation they created underwater. Sculls
Three hundred and fifty children under the age of five drown in pools each year nationwide. Two thousand and six hundred children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for near-drowning incidents. These statistics can bring chills down one’s spine. With drowning being such a threat, it is surprising how many guardians of young children dismiss the importance of their child learning how to swim. Survival swim lessons gives infants and toddlers the skills they need to move through the water independently while incorporating being able to breath when needed.
