From the 1700s to the 1900s, dramatic political, social, technological, and economic changes were made. Along with the scientific, political, and agricultural revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries came the Industrial Revolution. Beginning in the 1750s, manufacturing began to revolutionize in England. A transition to using coal as the primary energy source generated a plethora of technological advancements. Factories became the dominant source of produced goods. As other countries followed suit in industrializing, global economies boomed. Industrialization reached far beyond the world of manufacturing to transform social structure, culture, and the economy.

The local governments were not adequately equipped to deal with the sudden surge in population; public services such as water and plumbing were insufficient, and housing was poorly built. By 1900, sewage systems were created and building policies were put in place to make cities more livable for the incoming laborers. Populations in industrialized places rose sharply due to the bettered standards of living. Faster and cheaper transportation combined with new agricultural technologies meant better diets. The public services put in place by governments made living conditions much more sanitary than they had ever been. There was more money to be spent on things outside of basic necessities; newfound wealth was invested in things that bettered people’s ways of life, in turn the overall standards of living were greatly increased.The scientific revolution brought curiosity and a whole new way of thinking; new medicines and vaccinations produced during it prevented fatal diseases that had never before been controlled, and therefore reduced mortality rates. They looked to new places to spend it; bars, sports, and gambling became outlets for middle-class working men. The new ideas from Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution, combined with the new values of the Industrial Revolution, created a new world of art and literature. Writing turned to focus on science and facts. Art began to diversify in creativity and styles. Because of the boosts to the economy, there was more money for investing in artwork and commissioning pieces. However, items that used to be crafted converted to be manufactured instead. Because of this, there was a lack of individuality, uniqueness, artistic elements in produced goods. Society began to transition from religiously to economically-focused. With urbanization and the creation of new philosophical and political schools of thought religion was analyzed and no longer held the power that it used to.
