Debate Over Immigration An American is an immigrant. The words are almost synonymous, because every last person in America except for the Native Americans can trace their lineage back to a far off land. This nation was founded by immigrants for immigrants and will always be so until some tryant closes the borders. Emma Lazarus and Arthur Schlesinger were two Americans whom both believe in having open arms, open minds and an penchant for change. However, on the other side of this comes two very disparaging views out of two men who want to see America shut down its borders to anyone that might not represent their idea of an All American. America is a land for immigrants to migrate to find freedom to chase their ideas of success with the only chain holding them back being their willingness to work. The point of this essay is to show the two sides of the debate over immigration represented by Emma Lazarus and Arthur Schlesinger as pro-immigration, with Owen Wister, and Madison grant as anti-immigration. …show more content…

The statue of liberty was more than just a solemn figure standing above New York City. It was an inspiration; hope embodied then multiplied by the number of hopeful immigrants that walked passed her. Lazarus’s poem shows the progression of a wild uncontrollable lightning bolt of potential forming into a honed and homely American individual holding the guiding lamp to the show the future immigrants the way. Lazarus believed that America was an opportunity for all to come unfurl their wings and begin anew. This was a place where any future American could learn how to crawl again before they sprinted headlong into their idea of success and fortune.
