Debenhams is known as the leading international and multi-channel company. This company sells wide-ranges of high-class apparels. Like every company that was built in this world, Debenhams has its own long history, its own view and goals, its own arrangement system and its own unique products. Debenhams’ earliest history was back on 1778, when William Clark opened a draper store that sells expensive fabrics, parasols, bonnets and gloves at 44 Wigmore Street in London’s West End. The firm was invested and became Clark & Debenhams in 1813. In 1818, Debenhams opened the first store in Cheltenham. The firm then succeeded from the Victorian fashion for family mourning, where a strict clothing and etiquette were firmly devoted to widows and other female relatives. In …show more content…

In the rest of the 19th century Debenhams opened offices in South Africa, Australia, Canada and China as well as took over retailing, wholesale and manufacturing companies, which continued until the 20th century. In 1905 Debenhams Ltd was incorporated, and merged with Marshall & Snellgrove 14 years after and purchased Harvey Nichols in the following years. In 1928, Debenhams changed its status into a public company for the first time. After 25 years passed, it was the largest department store group in the UK, possessing 84 companies and 110 stores and implemented central buying 16 years afterwards. This growth kept on growing from years to years. In 1976, Brown’s of Chester had been taken over by Debenhams and it is the only store that retained its original name instead of being re-branded Debenhams in 1977. In between 1985 until 1998, Debenhams was part of the Burton Group that was repositioned and introduced to exclusive merchandise.
